Ὁ Ἥλιος καὶ ὁ Ἀέρας - The Sun and the Wind

Ὁ Ἥλιος καὶ ὁ Ἀέρας

Ὁ Ἀέρας θύμωσε,
μὲ τὸν Ἥλιο μάλωσε.
Ὁ Ἀέρας ἔλεγε:
– Εἶμαι δυνατότερος!
Καὶ ὁ Ἥλιος ἔλεγε: 


– Σὲ περνῶ στὴ δύναμη!
Ἕνας γέρος γεωργὸς
μὲ τὴ μαύρη κάπα του
στὸ χωράφι πήγαινε. 


Ὁ Ἀέρας λάλησε:
– Ὅποιος ἔχει δύναμη
παίρνει ἀπὸ τὸν γέροντα
τὴ χονδρὴ τὴν κάπα του! 


Φύσησε, ξεφύσησεν,
ἔσκασε στὸ φύσημα,
ἄδικος ὁ κόπος του. 


Κρύωσεν ὁ γέροντας
καὶ διπλὰ τυλίχθηκε
στὴ χονδρὴ τὴν κάπα του. 


Μὰ κι ὁ Ἥλιος λάλησε:
– Ὅποιος ἔχει δύναμη
παίρνει ἀπὸ τὸ γέροντα
τὴ χονδρὴ τὴν κάπα του! 


Ἔφεξεν ὁλόλαμπρος,
καλοσύνη σκόρπισε,
κι ἔβγαλεν ὁ γέροντας
τὴ χονδρὴ τὴν κάπα του. 


Πάλι ξαναλάλησε:
– Ἄκουσε καὶ μάθε το,
σὲ περνῶ στὴ δύναμη,
γιατὶ πᾶς μὲ τὸ κακὸ
κι ἐγὼ πάω μὲ τὸ καλό!

The Sun and the Wind 
                          
The Wind was angry
he quarrelled with the Sun.
The Wind claimed:
"I' m stronger!"
The Sun replied:

"I outdo you in strength!" 

An old farmer
in a black cloak
was heading to his farm.


The Wind spoke:
"He who has the power
will quit the old man's cloak." 


He huffed and he puffed,
he blew with all his might;
his effort was vain. 


The old man grew cold
wrapping himself tighter
in his thick black cloak. 

Then the Sun said:
"He who has the power
will quit the old man's cloak." 


He shone in all his glory
Dissipating kindness,
so the old man took
his thick cloak off. 


He spoke once more:
"Hear and learn,
I am stronger than you are,
because you use malevolence,
whereas I use amenity".
